  El Cortez's new steakhouse is doing Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov 26, from 2 to 8 p.m., with three courses for $89. You start with an endive salad, lobster bisque or shrimp cocktail, then pick the El Cortez prime rib, a full turkey dinner with sage dressing and cranberry sauce, or a wild mushroom and chestnut Wellington, and finish with apple pie, warm chocolate cake or pumpkin pie. Reservations are open on the El Cortez site.

  Coming Soon: Five Guys at the Plaza is now aiming for Nov 12 for its hot dog cart and Dec 28 for the restaurant

  Downtown's first Five Guys was supposed to start with a hot dog cart under the Plaza's dome in the spring and open the full restaurant over the summer, and the Plaza's own site now just says it's opening in late 2026. Vital Vegas reports the cart by Carousel Bar should open Nov 12 and the 60-seat burger shop in the former Pop Up Pizza space should open Dec 28, so treat those as targets rather than promises.

  Closed: La Mona Rosa on Fremont East is no longer a restaurant and has turned into the Pink Monkey nightclub

  La Mona Rosa, the Mexican spot at 100 S. Sixth St. that replaced La Comida in January 2023, relaunched as the Pink Monkey nightclub on Oct 1, 2026, and owner Ryan Doherty told Vital Vegas the kitchen now only cooks for special events and buyouts. The new name is a wink (la mona rosa is Spanish for the pink monkey), but if it was your dinner stop before a night out on Fremont East, you'll need a new one.

  El Cortez opened on Fremont Street on Nov. 7, 1941, and on Saturday, Nov 7 it's marking 85 years by handing out free cake and champagne inside the casino. The property is 21 and up, and the new Alex Prime steakhouse and Siegel's 1941 are steps away if you want to stay for a meal after your toast.

  Closed: Hush Puppy's Neonopolis spot on Fremont Street shuts after about 11 months

  The Hush Puppy location at Neonopolis on Fremont Street has closed, Vital Vegas reports, about 11 months after it opened in the old Banger Brewing space in November 2025. The original Hush Puppy, frying catfish and hush puppies since 1975, is the only location on the restaurant's website now, at 7185 W Charleston Blvd, with drive-thru and carry-out from 3 to 10 p.m. and dine-in from 4 to 10 p.m. Neonopolis is looking for a new tenant for the Fremont space.

Hours are Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and you can reach them at 702-899-1333.   El Cortez has opened both halves of its remodeled restaurant on East Fremont, so the old Siegel’s room now does breakfast and lunch by day and steakhouse dinners at night. Alex Prime, a New York-style steakhouse named for owner Kenny Epstein’s late daughter Alex, serves USDA Prime cuts like a bone-in rib-eye and a 42-ounce tomahawk, plus tableside Steak Diane, prime rib, oysters Rockefeller and a raw bar with lobster Louie, and it runs 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Siegel’s 1941 is back daily from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with matzoh brei and country-fried steak in the morning, then patty melts, French dips, steak frites and a martini lunch from 11 a.m. The room seats more than 150 with emerald-green banquettes and cognac leather, Alex Prime takes OpenTable reservations, and Siegel’s takes walk-ins, all ahead of El Cortez’s 85th birthday on Nov. 7.

  Carson Kitchen in the old John E. Carson Hotel downtown has added more than a dozen new dishes and cocktails for fall and winter, including Fettuccine Foiefredo with duck confit, a Ginger Pear plate with brie and pecans, Neeps & Tatties made with sweet potato and rutabaga, and grilled oysters done Rockefeller-style with Swiss chard. If you want a cheaper way in, the bar-only happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 3 to 5 p.m., with grilled oysters and “Devil’s” eggs at $3 each and gyro tacos at $5 each.

  Coming 2027: Gritz Cafe adds a second spot at The Good Word on the Westside

  Gritz Cafe, the soul food spot Trina Jiles opened on the Historic Westside in 2008, is expanding for the first time. The Las Vegas City Council approved a lease on Oct 7 for two stalls at The Good Word Social Club, a city-backed dining and community hall taking shape at 1122 D St (at Madison Ave), and Gritz plans to open there in 2027, less than 2 miles from the original. Until then, the Stella Lake St. restaurant is open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m.–3 p.m., for peach cobbler waffles, catfish and waffles and build-your-own grits bowls.
