New Book: Gino Ferraro tells his story, with the recipes behind Ferraro's

Gino Ferraro, who has spent more than four decades building Ferraro's Ristorante on Paradise Road, has a new book called From Calabria, An American Dream: A Passion Worth Serving. It's part memoir and part cookbook, following him from a poor childhood in Calabria to New York in 1966 and Las Vegas in 1976, where an Italian deli and pizza shop grew into Ferraro's. He doesn't hold back on customers, critics or California wine (a diner who wanted firmer gnocchi was told hard gnocchi are just "sinkers"), and the recipes include the restaurant's osso buco, pasta e fagioli, veal piccata and Pappardelle Mimmo. You can buy it at the restaurant, which can also ship copies, or on Amazon. If you'd rather eat the food, Executive Chef Mimmo Ferraro's next wine dinner is Sun Oct 25 at 6 p.m., four courses paired with La Gerla wines from Montalcino for $195++ a person, and those reservations are final.
